Lalor Park: Roofs at the End of Their Pointing

A suburb built in one go

Lalor Park is named after the Lalor family, several of whom served as local councillors. It is a compact, almost entirely residential pocket between Seven Hills and Blacktown, and most of it went up as a post-war subdivision of modest single-storey cottages on regular blocks.

Suburbs built in a short window age in a short window. Walk the streets here and the roofs tell the same story house after house: concrete tile well past fifty years, ridge caps with the pointing weathered out of them, one or two replacement tiles that do not match, and a valley that has been patched rather than replaced.

Why the mortar goes

It is not just age. The shale-derived clays across this part of the Cumberland Plain are reactive — they swell through wet spells and shrink back in dry ones, and the house moves with them. Rigid cement bedding cannot follow that movement, so it cracks, and once a cap is loose everything else follows.
