Blacktown takes its name from the Aboriginal settlement connected with the land granted to Colebee and Nurragingy beside Richmond Road, and the name turns up in writing as early as 1822. The suburb grew around the station where the Richmond branch leaves the Main Western line, and the housing spreads out from there in rings — post-war cottages closest in, 1960s and 70s brick veneer beyond them, and a steady layer of newer townhouses and dual occupancies filling the gaps.
