Doonside Roofing, Beside Nurragingy Reserve

A suburb with a forest on its edge

Doonside was named by the settler Robert Crawford after his home town in Scotland. Its defining feature for anyone who maintains roofs is Nurragingy Reserve off Knox Road — sixty-three hectares of bushland park, with the Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens and the Aboriginal Heritage Garden inside it.

Bushland next door is lovely to live beside and hard on a roof. Leaf, bark, seed capsules and fine debris come down all year, and the streets closest to the reserve and the creek corridor fill their gutters and valleys faster than anywhere else in this council area.

What debris actually does

It is not the mess that matters, it is the moisture. Packed litter holds water against metal around the clock:

• Valley irons rust out from the bottom, long before the tiles are finished
• Gutters corrode along the back edge where you cannot see them from the ground
• Water backs up under the lower courses of tile and wets the battens
• Downpipes block, and the whole run overflows into the eaves

Which is why we almost always check the gutter line here before condemning anything on the roof itself.

The rest of the picture

Away from the reserve, Doonside has the same ageing brick-and-tile stock as the suburbs along the Western line, with the usual cracked ridge pointing and chipped, porous tiles after years of hail. Most of those roofs are candidates for restoration rather than replacement, and a free inspection will tell you which.
