Blackett Roofing: Estate Tile at Fifty Years

Named for a cattle station superintendent

Blackett carries the name of George Forster Blackett, who was superintendent of the government cattle station at Rooty Hill between 1820 and 1830. The suburb itself is far younger — one of the estate suburbs built out around Mount Druitt from the mid-1960s, with housing that went up quickly and to a consistent pattern.

Much of that stock has since moved into private ownership, and a lot of owners are discovering the same thing at the same time: the original roof has reached the end of its working life.

Reading a fifty-year-old tile roof

The tiles are the deciding factor, and there are only two outcomes.

If a tile still rings solid, sheds water and does not flex underfoot, the roof can be restored: broken tiles swapped, ridges rebedded and repointed, valleys replaced, surface cleaned and coated. That is roof restoration, and it is the cheaper road by a wide margin.

If the tiles have gone porous, are flaking at the surface or crack when walked, the roof is done. Coating them achieves nothing lasting, and the money is better spent on a replacement in tile or Colorbond.
